Auburn Welcomes Rising Coaching Star DeMarcus Van Dyke as New Cornerbacks Coach

Van Dyke’s Journey to Auburn

DeMarcus Van Dyke arrives at Auburn after two impressive seasons coaching the cornerbacks at the University of South Florida under head coach Alex Golesh. During his time at USF, he played a major role in revamping the Bulls’ defense and helped elevate their performance year over year.

Before USF, Van Dyke served in the same role at FIU in 2023. His coaching career also includes a significant chapter at his alma mater, the University of Miami, where he held multiple positions from 2018 to 2022. His time with the Hurricanes included work in defensive quality control, recruiting, and eventually a promotion to cornerbacks coach in 2021.

Auburn head coach Alex Golesh expressed excitement about the hire, emphasizing the qualities that make Van Dyke a strong addition to the staff.

Coaching Background and Early Career

Van Dyke began his coaching journey in 2017 at ASA College, where he served as the cornerbacks coach. His early success earned him an opportunity at Miami, a program where he had excelled as a student-athlete. Once on staff, he quickly made his presence felt.

In 2018, he joined the Hurricanes as a defensive quality control analyst. By 2019 and 2020, he transitioned into the recruiting department, helping Miami secure strong classes by connecting with young athletes across the country. His ability to communicate, motivate, and relate to players became a defining strength.

Miami recognized his potential and named him cornerbacks coach in 2021. The promotion marked a major milestone in Van Dyke’s coaching career and set the stage for his rise through the coaching ranks.

His next stop at FIU in 2023 expanded his experience at the collegiate level, while his tenure at USF solidified his reputation as a defensive specialist capable of producing immediate results.

Defensive Success at USF

During his two years with USF, Van Dyke helped guide the Bulls to 16 wins and contributed heavily to the program’s defensive turnaround. One of his standout achievements was improving the team’s scoring defense from 29.8 points per game to 23.3—a significant jump within just one season.

In 2025, USF ranked seventh nationally in turnovers gained, finishing the season with an impressive 24. A major part of this success was their 14 interceptions, a number that led the American Athletic Conference and ranked 13th nationwide. This total also tied USF’s highest interception count in a season since 2017.

Under Van Dyke’s guidance, cornerback DeShawn Rucker earned First Team All-AAC honors. Rucker’s standout season included 55 tackles, 39 solo stops, 1.5 tackles for loss, an interception, and four passes defended—proof of the high-impact coaching Van Dyke consistently delivers.

In recognition of his rising influence and potential, Van Dyke was named to the American Football Coaches Association’s 35 Under 35 list in December 2024, further cementing his status as one of the most promising young coaches in college football.

A Strong Playing Foundation

Before building his coaching résumé, Van Dyke made a name for himself as an athlete at the University of Miami. A dual-sport competitor in both football and track, he appeared in 51 games for the Hurricanes from 2007 to 2010. His career totals included 80 tackles, 10 passes defended, three interceptions, and three tackles for loss.

His athletic skills and speed caught the attention of NFL scouts, and in 2011 he was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Van Dyke went on to play six professional seasons, logging time with the Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, and Atlanta Falcons.

Across his NFL career, he recorded 17 tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception, and a fumble recovery. His professional experience equips him with firsthand knowledge he now brings to his players at Auburn, helping them understand the discipline and mindset necessary to compete at the highest levels.
