Hind leg weakness is one of the most common aging-related issues dog owners notice. It may start as slipping on floors or struggling to stand up, then gradually worsen.

Some dogs experience sudden weakness, while others decline slowly.

Common Causes of Hind Leg Weakness

Possible causes include:

Arthritis

Joint inflammation can make movement painful, causing weakness over time.

Hip Dysplasia

Some dogs develop hip issues that worsen with age.

Degenerative Myelopathy

This is a progressive spinal condition seen in certain breeds.

Neurological Problems

Pinched nerves or spinal disc issues can affect leg control.

Muscle Loss

Senior dogs naturally lose muscle mass if activity decreases.

At-Home Support Tips

Use rugs or traction mats, keep nails trimmed, help with ramps instead of stairs, and maintain gentle daily movement.

When to Contact a Veterinarian

If weakness progresses quickly, if your dog drags a paw, loses bladder control, or shows pain, veterinary evaluation is important.
